Orangemouth Tarantula

Costa Rican Orangemouth Tarantula (Psalmopoeus reduncus)

The Costa Rican Orange Mouth is a stunning arboreal tarantula native to the humid tropical forests of Central America, with its stronghold in the Central Pacific and Caribbean slopes of Costa Rica.
Key Characteristics:
  • Distinctive Features: It is easily identified by the vibrant, fiery orange hairs surrounding its mouthparts (chelicerae), which contrast beautifully with its velvety chocolate-brown and olive-green body.
  • Arboreal Lifestyle: Unlike terrestrial spiders, P. reduncus lives high above the ground, crafting intricate silk tube webs in tree hollows, crevices, or under loose bark.
  • Evolutionary Defense: Belonging to the Psalmopoeus genus, it lacks the irritating (urticating) hairs common in many New World tarantulas. Instead, it relies on its extreme speed and agility to evade predators.
  • Ecological Role: As a nocturnal ambush predator, it plays a vital role in the ecosystem by controlling populations of insects and occasionally small vertebrates.
Observation for Nature Photographers:
For our guests at Birding Spots Manuel Antonio, this species offers a fantastic opportunity for macro photography. Its preference for staying near the entrance of its silk retreat at night allows for breathtaking shots of its «orange mouth» and the intricate textures of its legs.
